Articles & Reviews - Interviews With Foreigners in Iceland
Interviews With Foreigners in Iceland

Timo Rychert is 21 years old, and is originally from Aachen, Germany. He now works as an editor for Saga Film here in Reykjavik.

What brought you to Iceland?
I was interested in the culture, and the creativity present in Reykjavik. It was also what I had seen and heard about the landscape, the country itself, and its people.

Why did you decide to stay, and live in Iceland?
Because it turned out to be much more beautiful that I had expected, in so many ways. The people, the landscape and many things have been even more exciting than I imagined. I guess it´s just pure enjoyment for me.

What do you like the most about Iceland?
The fact that you can really do what you want, in a way that you cannot in your own country.

What do you like the least about Iceland?
The weather is ok, the money is ok, but I really miss salty popcorn!

Matthew Collings is 22 years old, and grew up in England. He came to Iceland as a volunteer through the European Union EVS scheme. He now works in a Waldorf Kindergarten in downtown Reykjavik.

What brought you to Iceland?
I have always been a big music fan, and bands like Sigur Rós and Múm rekindled my interest in Iceland. I´d always read stories about Iceland and Vikings when I was a little kid, so it was always in my head somewhere.

Why did you decide to stay, and live in Iceland?
I feel very relaxed and comfortable here. Especially if you are a musician or artist of some kind, downtown Reykjavik is a great place to be. I think my character is also similar to many Icelanders, and we seem to have a lot in common, particularly a sense of humour.

What do you like the most about Iceland?
I also love the way I can go for a walk and see mountains at the end of the road. Some people get very frustrated with the weather here, but I think it makes everything surreal and dreamlike, especially in the winter. Also no-one thinks you are crazy here, which is very refreshing.

What do you like the least about Iceland?
Sometimes I feel I am living in a tiny bubble. It can be a little worryingly that you forget the rest of the world.
