Articles & Reviews - Sayings of the Vikings
The Sayings of the Vikings

Hávamál are words of wisdom which served as spiritual provisions for the Vikings on their long journeys over rough sea to discover new lands. These sayings are more than a thousand years old and give a valuable insight into the Viking way of thinking.

In short, Hávamál is the Viking guide on how to live. Hávamál tells one how to treat guests and how to behave. It advises about the art of living, friendship, money, happiness, eating, travelling, and even positive thinking. Hávamál reveals how to use power and explains phenomena such as foresight and agility as well as dwelling on the nature of secrecy, extravagance and moderation.

Hávamál has often been compared to the old Chinese book Tao (the Way), which contains the wisdom of the east. In this same manner the Hávamál is described as "The wisdom of the North". In the beginning of each chapter in the Visitor's Guide, you can read examples of Hávamál. For those wishing to learn more about the sayings of the Vikings; ask for a book on translated Hávamál wisdom at any of the bookstores or souvenirs shops.
