Exciting to own and behold!
Just over a hundred years ago, the first Icelandic painters graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. This fact may explain why most Icelandic art can be labelled as "modern art".
Of this first generation of Icelandic painters, Jóhannes S. Kjarval is perhaps the best known. His contemporaries include Thórarinn B. Thorláksson, Ásgrímur Jónsson, Jón Stefánsson and Kristín Jónsdóttir. Well-known Icelandic artists of the past few decades were Louisa Matthíasdóttir and Nína Tryggvadóttir who both worked in America. Others of that same period include Gunnlaugur Scheving, Gunnlaugur Blöndal, and Thorvaldur Skúlason.
Reykjavik offers a plethora of galleries for art lovers. The National Gallery of Iceland features primarily Icelandic art. Reykjavik Art Museum offers three venues with different emphasis: The Ásgrímur Jónsson Collection is named after the artist and features his work. Kjarvalsstadir is a good place to admire the work of Jóhannes S. Kjarval, altough a variety of other interesting exhibitions can be found there as well. The Harbour House features the works of Erró, possibly Iceland's best-known contemporary painter. The works of sculptors Einar Jónsson, Ásmundur Sveinsson, and Sigurjón Ólafsson also have their respective galleries, each of which definitely merits a visit. Another gallery worth a visit is Gerðarsafn, the art museum in Kópavogur.
Art Gallery Fold, located at Raudarárstígur 14-16, is by far the largest sales gallery in the country, with an exemplary variety of works by over 200 artists from every generation. The gallery also has a branch in the shopping mall Kringlan. There the emphasis is on fine art in convenient sizes, suitable as gifts.
