Reykjavik is famous for its lovely cafés and vibrant nightlife. It is said that Reykjavik has become one of the hottest destinations for nightlife in Europe. We leave it to you to judge whether this statement is true and encourage you to try as many venues as possible. However, in order for you to be able to enjoy your time in Reykjavik to the most, we have compiled a list of the most popular hangouts in town on the next pages. Choose your mood and pick the venue accordingly - there is something for everyone!
A piece of advice to "first-timers": Do not expect to see many people downtown on weekends between 9 PM and 11 PM (but you?ll see many tourists). The nightlife does not really start until midnight, mostly because many people are at private parties until midnight or even 1 AM. One of the reasons might be the notoriously high prices for alcoholic beverages. Those who do not go to parties usually visit the cafés and bars instead, before going to the clubs. This is what we advice you to do as well! Try out the famous coffees at Kaffítár, where smiling baristas will serve you award-winning coffees, or check out the atmosphere at Victor, a popular bistro and bar.
The information on this list is liable to change and therefore we do not take responsibility on accuracy. It should however give a good idea of what each place has to offer. The average price for coffee is around ISK 280, a small beer around ISK 450 and a large beer around ISK 600. Many places have special offers, especially early in the evening or during daytime.
At the bars and cafés which serve food, the kitchens usually close at 10 or 11 PM but some are open well into the night during weekends. Most of the bars close at 1 AM on working days and at 3 or 4 AM on weekends, although some nightclubs are open until 5 AM. Most places have no entrance fee until midnight. Clubs usually charge 500-1000 ISK for entrance, or more if a band or solo artist is playing.
Go ahead and experience Reykjavik the way the locals do it!
