01/08/2007 - Many festivals will be held all around Iceland this weekend. Bank Holiday Weekend is traditionally a time where most Icelanders leave the city (or wherever else they may live) and head for camping sites and outdoor dances.
The largest festivals will be held in Akureyri and Vestmannaeyjar. "Ein með öllu" in Akureyri is a family oriented festival where popular Icelandic children entertainers will perform during the day and parents and older children can join the dances at night together. In fact, unaccompanied teens and young adults up to 23 years old will not have access to the festivals camping site. This was a controversial decision, but is meant to ensure that families with children have priority to the camping sites and festivities during this weekend. "Þjóðhátíð" in Vestmannaeyjar is more of a teenage festival, where the evening and early night programme, followed by dances on two separate stages, is the main attraction. However, many adults and families attend to this festival as well, and the atmosphere in Vestmannaeyjar during Þjóðhátíð is said to be completely unique.
Other notable festivals are "Neistaflug" in Neskaupsstaður (East Iceland), "Síldarævintýrið" in Siglufjörður (North Iceland), "Unglingalandsmót UMFÍ" in Höfn (East Iceland) and Innipúkinn - an "indoor-outdoors" music festival held in Reykjavík.
