The Icelandic national team in handball won the second place in the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing, China on Monday. Only one Icelandic person has won a silver price on the Olympics before, which was Vilhjálmur Einarsson in the Melbourne 1956. The team returned yesterday and the whole nation gathered to welcome their heroes. The team captain, Ólafur Stefánsson said that it was a gift to be Icelandic and that was a gift only about 300.000 people have.
The success of the Icelandic handball team has gotten a lot of international attention since it's unusual for a small nation like Iceland to go as far as second place in a International sport event, especially in team sports.
After the welcoming ceremony the team was awarded medals by the President for their achievements.
